Acne and its causes

Acne is a condition of skin showing up as bumps of different kinds like pimples, blackheads, whiteheads or cysts. Acne can be caused in teenagers because of the hormonal changes during the time of puberty. If parents get acne during their teenage than it is likely that their children may also get acne during their teens. The good news for most people is that acne vanishes almost completely as teenage passes.

Acne Why Do I Get Acne ?

Most teens get a type of acne called acne vulgaris. Vulgaris means ‘of common type’ and it is not bad as it sounds. It usually appears on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and upper back.

The skin has pores or hair follicles which contain sebaceous glands. These are also called oil glands which make sebum which is a type of oil that lubricates on hair and skin. The sebaceous glands mostly make the right amount of sebum. When the teen’s body starts to develop and get mature with the stimulation of sebaceous glands making sebum and glands becoming more overactive. The pores get clogged if there is too much sebum and too many dead skin cells. Then bacteria can get trapped inside the pores and can start multiplying causing swelling and redness, this is the start of acne.

If a pore is clogged and closes up bungling out of the skin, then a whitehead is caused. If a pore is clogged but remains open then the top of the surface darkens causing a blackhead. The wall of the pore can sometime open allowing the sebum, bacteria and dead skin cells to make their way under the skin which causes a small red bump called pimple.

Infected lumps or cysts that are bigger than pimples are nodules. They are caused by clogged pores opening very deep in the skin and can be a cause of pain. Large cysts that seem like acne can be caused by staph infection but this happens occasionally.

Acne myths

Few myths exist about the causes of acne. Eating greasy foods like French fries, pizza, chocolate do not cause acne. Some people notice that their breakouts get more severe when they eat too much certain food, so taking that food must be reduced to see a change.

Stress is not a reason to get acne although it can be harmful for the existing acne because stress increases the production of sebum.

Myths also exist to make acne better. Sun doesn’t really help acne however a tan can make acne look less severe. It would not help permanently to get rid of acne and some people feel that the oil which is produced by their skin while out in the sun makes their pimples worse.

What be done about acne

Face should be washed regularly at least twice a day with a mild soap. This will help in preventing oil buildup that causes acne. Face should not be scrubbed hard with a washcloth because acne cannot be scrubbed away and scrubbing will actually make it worse by irritating the skin and pores. The face should be cleaned gently.

Oil free makeup and sunscreens should be used. It won’t clog the pores that contribute to acne. Makeup should be removed before washing face so it doesn’t clog the pores.

Hair gels and hair sprays should be kept away from the face because they can also clog pores. If long hairs touch the face then they should be washed frequently to keep away the oil. If an after-school job puts in contact with oil like gas stations or fast-food restaurants than face should be washed after going home. It can also help in washing the face after exercising.

Many lotions and creams that contain salicylic acid of benzoyl peroxide are used for preventing acne and clearing the skin at the same time. They can be used for experiment but direction should be followed if there is a problem of allergy.
